KLM Airlines Goes Live with ULTRAMAIN’s electronic flightlogs

Date:
October 2008

APRIL 3, 2008 – Using ULTRAMAIN’s electronic flightlogs, KLM became the first airline to use the latest technology in maintaining continuous contact between aircraft and ground operations. Until recently, paper-based documentation was processed after landing. Flight logs can now be electronically updated and processed, regardless of whether the KLM’s aircraft is on the ground or in flight. KLM’s new Boeing 777-300s are now equipped with e-ATL and e-Reporting. The new technologies improve cabin quality because minor discomforts to passengers can be fixed quickly. Similarly, repairs needed for the cockpit can also be more swiftly planned and carried out, further reducing technical delays.

“For the first time in history, we continuously monitor the possible complaints of the aircraft in flight. As ground crew we feel better prepared, a wonderful feeling” says Peter Somers, Executive Vice President of Engineering & Maintenance.

KLM decided to invest in the development of this innovative system because the airline did not wish to wait for aircraft manufacturers to introduce this as a standard feature. Initially, the new applications aboard KLM’s Boeing 777-300s will only be used by crew. KLM intends to introduce these facilities throughout its fleet in due course, and also sees broadband opportunities for passenger applications, such as real-time internet and email. Also, KLM has completed its 6-month review of e-ATL and they have received confirmation from the airworthiness authorities that they can apply for unlimited use of the software.
